In 13th century Italy, Francis Bernardone, the son of an Assisi merchant, renounces a promising army career in favor of a monastic life and starts his own religious order, sanctioned by the Pope.

Set in his native Umbria, Italy, the film details the events and influences that made him who he was. Known as everything from a soldier to a businessman to a nature enthusiast, Saint Francis was much more than that. Actor Liev Schreiber narrates and Robert Sean Leonard provides Francis's voice.

Filmed during Jonas Mekas’s visit to Assisi in 1967, this short documents his time in the city known for its spiritual associations. The footage was later incorporated into his 2003 compilation film Travel Songs (1967–1981).

A series of funny and often irreverent vignettes, adapted from the true story of St. Francis of Assisi, all illustrating the simplest joys of a life based on humility, faith and compassion.

During World War II, a junior American Army officer, Lt. Peter Stirling, gets sent to the psychiatric ward whenever he insists that an Army mule named Francis speaks to him.

This film explores many of his key canvases which have been newly filmed in HDTV. The works are complemented solely with Bacon’s own words, recorded by Derek Jacobi. The artist’s biography is outlined, but the focus is on his ideas: his thoughts about his work, his reflections about how and why he paints. The result is a rigorous and revealing portrait of one of the few artists who has truly changed the way we see and understand ourselves.
